Final Reflection

Image
What are some of the most important things you learned throughout this experience? First off, I have learned to be a better photographer. Emily has taught me lots of new camera and photo editing tricks. I know how to light up areas of a room, set up a tripod and use it, as well as basic Photoshop. Secondly, I learned how to gain clients and network with other people. During the two weeks, I went to a couple BNI meetings with Emily, which is a business networking company. There I met other local business owners and got to learn how to do a pitch. Lastly, I learned how to make a website. I got to update and fix Emily's website on Wix- I leaned how to create pages and pop-ups. I learned building your own website is very important. How have you grown throughout this experience? I have grown into a better photographer, networker, stager, photo editor, website creator, and time manager. What will you do with what you learned? My future goals have become more clear through

Completed Projects

Image
Edited and Finished Photo Shoots Here are some completed projects that Emily and I worked on during my two week Capstone Project.  ~~~ This was a model home staged to sell in the new Percheron development. I really loved the pop of emerald green that is seen throughout the house, not a color I have seen much but was such a perfect combination with the black/white/camel colors in the rest of the home. It was super trendy and unique. ~~~ When we pulled up to this regal yet comfortable home settled yards away from the north end of Lake Minnewashta, we felt immediately at peace. The large windows and patio doors opened up to beautiful lake shore views. Union Place, located in downtown Excelsior, is on the cutting edge of home automation and technology. ~~~ This contemporary home featured a pop of red throughout chic living room. Through the accent pillows, chair, and accessories, this space added the extra 'wow' factor with the fiery color. The vibr

Staging a Photo Shoot

Image
Buying Items Emily frequently goes to Home Goods and other furniture/house accessories stores to buy items to stage a photo shoot with. Staging a photo shoot is when you add accent pieces or furniture to make the house/room look lived in and pretty. You can do this with plants, vases, art, etc... For a kitchen photo shoot, we shopped at Home Goods for items we could place on the island and on the cabinets. It's key to find items that match the room, so we looked off pictures of the remodeled kitchen to see what would match- we took into consideration the cabinet color, what metals were present, and the wall and flooring. We ended up buying a silver vase, some colorful bowls and a potted plant. The Shoot Staged items Positioning the camera We shot at a house that recently had their kitchen remodeled. We used the items we bought to make the empty kitchen look homey. During the shoot, I moved around the lights (Emily got new ones and this was our first sho

Head Shots A head shot is something almost everyone needs going into any job. They can show your professional and 'fun' side. Emily always tries to create a unique and seamless photos. Capturing true expression is the necessity of a good portrait. Emily says, "Whether you are looking to update your profile photo, showcase your team, or plan to frame and hang a piece of art in your home for the next generation to hold, I will work with you to get that perfect look." During my the end of my first week, I shadowed Emily to a shoot where her client wanted to update her head shots. Emily rents a space at The Golden Rule in Excelsior, where she takes most of her portraits for people. The Golden Rule My job was to help her move furniture and objects around, set up lights, fix any hair or make-up, and watch camera techniques. Setting up a flash Networking  By observing Emily, I also learned that in order to be successful, you need to not only be

Creating Your Website

Image
What is Wix? Emily uses Wix to create her personalized website. During our two weeks together, I have learned how to edit and fashion a beautiful, unique website to promote your business. She had me focus on editing the Senior Photographs page on her site. There I updated her photos as well as linking items to her Instagram page. I also made sure that everything looked good on the mobile version as well as desktop, since things can transfer and look funny on your phone. A website can be VERY important in your career because that is how you advertise you and your business to the world. It helps people learn more about what you do and see your work. Through this experience I feel better prepared to someday make my own website to help promote my services/business. How is Architectural Photography Different?

Image
Architectural Photo Shoots  Emily took me to two photo shoots- one was for a home stager and another for a realtor. A home stager is someone who displays the furniture and accessories in the home. The goal of staging is to make a home appealing to the highest number of potential buyers, thereby selling a property more swiftly and for more money. The home stager, Misty, wanted detailed shots of the furniture and vignettes to add to her portfolio. The realtor, on the other hand, wanted wide shot photos of the house and room so that potential customers could see the whole house.  During the photo shoot for the home stager, I learned about lighting and composition of a photograph. Emily taught me how to use flash lighting to get rid of shadows in the rooms. We would light up different sections of the room at a time and later layer these photos in Photoshop to create the perfect photo. She also showed me how to use a tripod to capture a perfectly spaced photo. A tripod is
